Local musicians Pat Fitzgerald and Robin Dale Ford will be the final performers at the Beluga Nights series of concerts July 25 at 6 p.m. at Beluga Field on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

The concert is free and open to the public. Beluga Field is located next to the Student Recreation Center at UAF. In case of rain, the event will be moved to Wood Center. Picnickers are welcome. Please no dogs or alcohol.

Peggy Shumaker, teacher and author of poetry collections including “Blaze” and “Gnawed Bones,” as well as a book of lyrical non-fiction called “Just Breathe Normally,” will moderate a discussion led by poets Derick Burleson, Cynthia Hardy and Jeanne Clark, during the poetry installment of the Alaska Classics series held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 28.

Burleson is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and author of “Never Night.” His first collection of poems, “Ejo: Poems, Rwanda 1991-94,” won the 2000 Felix Pollack Prize in Poetry.

Hardy is an associate professor of English at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and author of collections of poetry including “Beneath a Portrait of a Horse.”

Clark is creative writing faculty member at California State University, Chico and the author of the poem collections “Ohio Blue Tips” and “”Gorrill’s Orchard.” All Alaska Classics lectures will be held in the Schaible Auditorium on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. The 2009 eruption of Mount Redoubt provided the perfect opportunity for volcanologist Peter Webley of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute to use photographs and technology to track ash clouds in real time.

Webley will discuss his research, and his tracking equipment and use of Google Earth for visualizing real-time satellite data, in his free lecture and learning session, “The World From Above: Natural Hazards in Alaska,” at 7 p.m. Monday, July 26. The event is part of the Monday Marvels series, a free hands-on session and lecture series presented by UAF Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning and the Alaska Summer Research Academy.

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power will host a community lecture Tuesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. at the Blue Loon.

The lecture will focus on Alaska’s geothermal resources. A panel of university and community experts will talk about geothermal projects across the state and will discuss innovative geothermal exploration techniques.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Rural Alaska Honors Institute will honor RAHI students at a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, July 14, at 1 p.m. in the Schaible Auditorium with a public reception to follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Great Hall in the Fine Arts Complex.

The 63 students participating in this year’s program come from 41 communities across Alaska. They spent six weeks living in UAF residence halls, building their academic skills and learning firsthand about college life. They earned up to 10 college credits.

Organized in 1983 at the request of the Alaska Federation of Natives, RAHI aims to help increase college success for rural and Alaska Native students. Hundreds of RAHI graduates have gone on to earn graduate, baccalaureate and associate degrees. Many have joined Alaska’s professional workforce and many more are pursuing postsecondary education.

Among the graduates are participants in RAHI II, Next Step, a program that allows students to do research alongside UAF scientists. Following is a list of graduates:

The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy will host a statewide webinar Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m.

The webinar will focus on a new online tool, which combines seasonal climate summaries and weather, sea ice and wildfire forecasts into a single document. John Walsh with the International Arctic Research Center will offer a preview of the tool and answer questions.

Rob Roy, author of “Living Mortgage Free: Innovative Strategies for Debt-Free Home Ownership,” will present a free public lecture Monday, July 26 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

Roy is the owner of the eco-friendly Earthwood Building School and author of more than 15 books on affordable and green building methods. He will discuss what he calls “radical but workable strategies that enable you to own your own home.” He’ll explain how to find and buy affordable land, use of temporary shelters, low-cost home design and other ideas.

Roy will also lead a subsequent cordwood masonry workshop July 27-29 at the Georgeson Botanical Garden Pavilion. Roy and his wife and business partner, Jaki Roy, will build a cordwood garden shed during the three-day workshop. Registration is $300.

The Roys have spent their adult lives mastering green building methods and other strategies that allow the type of financial freedom most homeowners only dream about. The couple has been sharing their techniques at workshops at the Earthwood Building School since 1981. Roy’s other books include “Cordwood Building: The State of the Art,” “The Sauna” and “Stoneview: How to Build an Eco-Friendly Little Guesthouse.”

Roy’s lecture is presented by UAF Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning.

The fourth annual Alaska Book Festival has a new look this year, but maintains the same goal: To celebrate literature from and about Alaska.

The festival will consist of a series of lectures that invite local experts to discuss books they consider to be “must reads” in specific topic areas. The series opens Wednesday, July 14, when Tom Bundtzen will discuss the best books on Alaska mining and geology. The series closes Wednesday, Aug. 18 with a panel led by author and news columnist Dermot Cole and Noel Wien Library director Greg Hill. The two will discuss classic Alaska books that are “must-reads” for newcomers to the state. The rest of the schedule is:

July 21 – Alaska aviation, featuring Dirk Tordoff;

July 28 – Poetry, featuring Derick Burleson, Cindy Hardy and Jeanne Clark, moderated by Peggy Shumaker;

Aug. 11- Alaska glaciology, featuring Bruce Molnia.

All lectures are held at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium and are free.

The Alaska Book Festival culminates with a keynote lecture Wednesday, Aug. 25. Charles Wohlforth, author of “The Whale and the Supercomputer,” will present the free lecture at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

Author and scientist Richard Dawkins will speak at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Thursday, July 15 at 7 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall on the UAF campus.

Dawkins’ lecture, “Is Religion a Darwinian Adaptation? Or is it Intelligently Designed?” is free and open to the public. A book sale and signing will follow in the Great Hall.

The nation’s capital won’t seem so far away when Alaska Public Radio Network’s Libby Casey returns to Fairbanks to talk about her work covering news from Washington D.C. Her free lecture, “The View From Washington,” begins at 7 p.m. Monday, July 12 in Schaible Auditorium at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Casey, who spent more than a decade in Fairbanks reporting for local public radio station KUAC and teaching radio production at UAF, moved to Washington in 2008. During her time in Fairbanks she covered everything from the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race to the service of soldiers in Iraq.

Casey is APRN’s Washington D.C. correspondent and a regular guest host of C-SPAN’s Washington Journal. Her stories have appeared on “All Things Considered,” “Morning Edition,” “The World,” and the CBC. Since moving to Washington she’s discussed Alaska politics on “The Today Show,” CNN, MSNBC and Fox News.

Casey has earned multiple journalistic honors, including three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and the Alaska Press Club’s Public Service Award for a series profiling fallen soldiers in Iraq. Her coverage of the Yukon Quest earned a national Silver Reel from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. She has also earned numerous sports reporting awards from the Alaska Press Club.
